[00:08]: thank you
[00:09]: the SAT is about to change forever in
[00:13]: 2024 it will be going from a paper and
[00:15]: pencil test to a digital adaptive test
[00:17]: and in this video I'm going to tell you
[00:19]: everything you need to know about this
[00:21]: new test so you can get the score that
[00:22]: you want to get so first things first
[00:24]: just because it's digital does not mean
[00:25]: you can take it at home that would be
[00:27]: stupid you still have to go into a
[00:29]: testing center to take the test however
[00:31]: the test is getting shorter it's going
[00:33]: all the way from three hours down to two
[00:35]: hours and 14 minutes which is great the
[00:37]: reading and writing sections have been
[00:39]: combined into the aptly named reading
[00:41]: and writing section they're just so
[00:43]: creative at college board and the two
[00:44]: math sections have been combined into a
[00:46]: single math section where you have a
[00:48]: Desmos calculator on hand the entire
[00:50]: time and that is a complete Game Changer
[00:52]: but we'll get into that in a bit each
[00:54]: section is divided into two modules each
[00:56]: reading and writing module is 27
[00:58]: questions in 32 minutes so 71 seconds a
[01:01]: question and each math module is 22
[01:03]: questions in 35 minutes so 95 seconds
[01:06]: per question this is more time per
[01:08]: question than you get on the paper for
[01:10]: SAT but here's what's important the
[01:12]: first module of each section is going to
[01:14]: be a range of questions that everybody
[01:16]: gets they're going to be in the
[01:17]: randomized order so it's harder to cheat
[01:19]: but everyone will get the same set of
[01:21]: questions on the first module then the
[01:23]: second module will be designed based on
[01:25]: how well you did in the first module so
[01:27]: if you did well in the first module the
[01:28]: second module will be harder if you did
[01:30]: poorly on the first module the second
[01:32]: will be easier and this has a couple of
[01:34]: implications first it means you'll kind
[01:35]: of know how well you did on the first
[01:37]: module by the time you get to the second
[01:39]: right like if you get to the second
[01:40]: module and your first question is what
[01:42]: is 20 of 100 now is the time to panic
[01:45]: because you probably bond that first
[01:47]: module and the other question is how is
[01:49]: this supposed to be scored because some
[01:51]: students are getting harder problems
[01:52]: than other students now of course
[01:54]: College boards extremely vague on how
[01:56]: they're actually going to score this
[01:57]: test so I took it upon myself to get the
[01:59]: software that the digital sat uses and
[02:01]: run some experiments the first thing I
[02:03]: did was butcher the reading and writing
[02:04]: section because I simply don't care
[02:06]: about it then I took the math section
[02:08]: just as I would as an SAT Math to their
[02:10]: free tutoring at learnsctmath.com by the
[02:12]: way I got a perfect score on the first
[02:14]: module but then I got two problems wrong
[02:15]: on the second module despite that though
[02:17]: I still ended with an 800 on the test I
[02:20]: wanted to see what the cutoff was for a
[02:22]: perfect score so I took the test again
[02:23]: this time missing three questions and I
[02:25]: got a 780 so you have to get a perfect
[02:27]: score on module one and then you can
[02:29]: afford to miss about two questions on
[02:31]: module two but generally speaking you
[02:32]: don't need to get every single question
[02:34]: correct to get a perfect score also note
[02:36]: that this doesn't work the other way
[02:37]: around I tried the reading and writing
[02:39]: section missing two problems on the
[02:40]: first module and getting a perfect on
[02:42]: the second and I got a 760 from that so
[02:44]: you have to get a perfect on module one
[02:46]: so clearly you're penalized more for
[02:48]: missing easy problems than hard problems
[02:50]: which makes sense but I wanted to see
[02:52]: exactly what extent this is true so like
[02:54]: any normal person would do I took the
[02:55]: test two more times the first time I got
[02:58]: everything wrong on module one and a
[02:59]: perfect score on the easiest possible
[03:01]: module two it was very easy trust me the
[03:04]: second time I took the test I did the
[03:05]: opposite thing I got a perfect score on
[03:07]: module one and then got everything wrong
[03:09]: on the very hard module too now let's
[03:11]: play a game what do you think my score
[03:13]: was for each of these tests place your
[03:15]: bets now
[03:16]: [Music]
[03:22]: okay Moment of Truth the score for test
[03:25]: a was a 4 10. God and the score for test
[03:29]: B was a 560. that is a big difference
[03:32]: remember both of these tests got the
[03:34]: same number of problems right it just
[03:36]: depends which module the big takeaway
[03:38]: from these experiments is that module
[03:40]: one can and will completely screw over
[03:42]: your SAT score it's only 22 questions
[03:44]: and yet it is setting a hard floor or
[03:46]: ceiling on the rest of your test so now
[03:48]: let's talk about content changes on the
[03:50]: digital sat the biggest change of all on
[03:53]: the reading and the writing and the math
[03:54]: is that the test is going away from long
[03:57]: passages and word problems and
[03:59]: transitioning to short isolated
[04:01]: questions this is most impactful in the
[04:03]: reading section because the 85 line
[04:05]: passages are completely gone and are
[04:07]: replaced with shorter paragraphs and
[04:09]: sentences that you have to fill in the
[04:11]: blanks for it's still a lot of the same
[04:13]: skills sentence completion identifying
[04:15]: purpose analyzing data grammar
[04:17]: structuring sentences however for now
[04:19]: you're missing the questions that would
[04:20]: only make sense with longer passages
[04:21]: like questions about characters or those
[04:24]: two-part questions where you use the
[04:25]: evidence and one question to support the
[04:27]: answer of the previous one now because
[04:29]: I'm an SAT math tutor that's pretty much
[04:30]: all I can speak to about the reading
[04:32]: section and how it's changing but I do
[04:34]: have some strong thoughts about the math
[04:36]: section so let's get into that on the
[04:37]: math section the questions are pretty
[04:39]: much the same as they were before the
[04:41]: only piece of content that's actually
[04:42]: getting removed is imaginary numbers and
[04:45]: good riddance I say why were those on
[04:47]: the test in the first place the other
[04:48]: change is just like how in the reading
[04:50]: and writing the problems are getting
[04:51]: shorter and more concise so are the word
[04:53]: problems on the math sat word problems
[04:56]: are also making up a smaller proportion
[04:57]: of questions on the test the new
[04:59]: breakdown is 35 algebra 35 advanced math
[05:03]: that's systems of equations quadratics
[05:05]: exponentials rationals Etc 15 problem
[05:08]: solving and data analysis that's your
[05:10]: word problems and 15 geometry and trig
[05:13]: and by the way trig does not mean unit
[05:15]: circle and polar coordinates it's
[05:17]: Pythagorean theorem socato the stuff you
[05:19]: probably learned in Geometry okay here's
[05:21]: the really big change you get a Desmos
[05:23]: calculator for the entire test for those
[05:26]: of you that haven't used Desmos you can
[05:27]: go to desmos.com calculator and play
[05:29]: around with it because that is literally
[05:31]: what you will get on the digital sat it
[05:34]: can do arithmetic yes but it is also a
[05:36]: straight up graphing calculator let me
[05:38]: show you why this is crazy take systems
[05:40]: of equations for example this is
[05:42]: something that will literally show up on
[05:43]: every sat previously you would need to
[05:45]: solve these problems by hand using
[05:47]: substitution or more commonly
[05:49]: elimination with Desmos however you just
[05:51]: type in both equations and the point of
[05:53]: intersection is your solution to the
[05:55]: system you can even solve regular
[05:57]: algebra problems like this just graph
[05:58]: each side of the equation and then the
[06:00]: point of intersection is your solution
[06:02]: if you get a function that has a mystery
[06:04]: constant that you need to solve for you
[06:06]: can plug in that equation into Desmos
[06:08]: and then use the slider to guess and
[06:09]: check different values for that mystery
[06:11]: constant in fact you can graph pretty
[06:13]: much everything x and y intercepts graph
[06:16]: it number of solutions graphite points
[06:18]: if section graph it minimum value graph
[06:20]: it but wait there's one other thing
[06:22]: that's really funny if you need to
[06:24]: calculate the mean or median simply type
[06:26]: in the word mean input your data and
[06:28]: then Desmos will automatically calculate
[06:30]: it for you and I bet 99 of people are
[06:32]: going to take the test without actually
[06:34]: knowing that's a feature so be glad
[06:36]: you're watching this video and you're in
[06:37]: the one percent I'd estimate that about
[06:39]: 25 of problems on this test should be
[06:41]: solved with Desmos and about half of
[06:42]: them can be if you really wanted to
[06:44]: you're still allowed to bring your own
[06:45]: calculator but don't even bother Desmos
[06:47]: is better in every way another change
[06:49]: that's pretty insignificant but I still
[06:51]: feel like I should mention is that the
[06:52]: free response questions no longer limit
[06:54]: you to four boxes because that would be
[06:56]: stupid and last but not least the whole
[06:58]: reason this test is going digital is so
